Question 10: Polity and Governance
Which one of the following High Courts has the territorial jurisdiction over Andaman and Nicobar Islands?
aAndhra Pradesh
bCalcutta
cMadras
dOrissa
AnswerThe answer is (b).
The Calcutta High Court has territorial jurisdiction over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and holds a circuit bench at Port Blair. The Union Territory has no High Court of its own. Remember similar links for other Union Territories: the Kerala High Court covers Lakshadweep, and the Punjab and Haryana High Court covers Chandigarh.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) The Andhra Pradesh High Court has no authority over the islands.
- (b) Correct: the Calcutta High Court, with a circuit bench at Port Blair.
- (c) The Madras High Court covers Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, not the islands.
- (d) The Orissa High Court covers Odisha only.
