AnswerThe answer is (d).

All four won the Nobel Peace Prize: Desmond Tutu in 1984, Lech Walesa in 1983, and Shimon Peres and Yasser Arafat in 1994, when they shared it with Yitzhak Rabin. Tutu won it for his non-violent struggle against apartheid in South Africa, Walesa for leading the Solidarity movement in Poland, and Peres and Arafat for the Oslo peace process between Israel and the Palestinians.

  • 1. Archbishop Desmond Tutu won in 1984.
  • 2. Lech Walesa won in 1983.
  • 3. Shimon Peres shared the 1994 prize.
  • 4. Yasser Arafat shared the 1994 prize.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (c) goes: it leaves 1 out.

What you needed to know: Archbishop Desmond Tutu won in 1984.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (b) goes: it leaves 2 out.

What you needed to know: Lech Walesa won in 1983.

  3. Then, if you were sure statement 3 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 3 out.

What you needed to know: Shimon Peres shared the 1994 prize.

Only (d) is left. You didn’t need statement 4.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Peres and Arafat also won it.
  • (b) Walesa also won it.
  • (c) Tutu also won it.
  • (d) Right: all four won it.
