Question 74: Science and Technology

Which one of the following animals is monogamous?

aWolf
bWalrus
cSeal
dDeer

AnswerThe answer is (a).

Wolves form lasting pair bonds, usually a breeding pair at the centre of the pack, so they are treated as monogamous. Walruses and seals are polygynous: males hold territories or harems and breed with many females in the season, and deer stags also mate with many hinds during the rut.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: wolves form a lasting breeding pair.
  • (b) Walruses are polygynous; males mate with many females.
  • (c) Seals are mostly polygynous, with males holding harems.
  • (d) Deer stags mate with several hinds in the rut.
