Question 68: Basic Numeracy

In a company 60 % of the employees are men. Of these, 40 % are drawing more than Rs 50,000 per year. If 36 % of the total employees of the company draw more than Rs 50,000 per year, what is the percentage among women who are drawing less than Rs 50,000 per year?

a70
b60
c40
d30

AnswerThe answer is (a).

Take 100 employees: 60 are men and 40 are women. 40 percent of the men earn above Rs 50,000, which is 24 men. The total above Rs 50,000 is 36, so 36 - 24 = 12 women earn more than that. Women earning less: 40 - 12 = 28, and 28/40 = 70 percent.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: 28 of 40 women is 70 percent.
  • (b) 60 percent would be 24 of the 40 women; the count is 28.
  • (c) 40 percent is the men's share above Rs 50,000, a different group.
  • (d) 30 percent is the share of women earning above Rs 50,000 (12 of 40), the opposite case.
