Question 59: Economy and Social Development

With reference to the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), consider the following statements:

  1. 1.The new WPI series with base 1993-94 = 100 became effective from April 1998.
  2. 2.In the new WPI series, became effective from 1 April 2000.
  3. 3.The weight for electricity has increased in the new WPI series.

Which of these statements are correct?

a1, 2 and 3
b2 and 3
c1 and 3
d1 and 2

AnswerThe answer is (b).

The revised WPI series with base 1993-94 = 100 came into effect from April 2000, not April 1998, so statement 1 is false and statement 2 is true. The new series also raised the weight of electricity, so statement 3 is true. Hence only statements 2 and 3 are correct.

  • 1. The 1993-94 series became effective in April 2000, not April 1998.
  • 2. The new series became effective from 1 April 2000.
  • 3. The weight of electricity went up in the new series.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 1.

What you needed to know: The 1993-94 series became effective in April 2000, not April 1998.

Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statements 2 or 3.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Statement 1 is false: the series began in April 2000.
  • (b) Right: statements 2 and 3.
  • (c) Includes statement 1, which is false, and leaves out 2.
  • (d) Includes statement 1, which is false, and leaves out 3.
