Question 52: Economy and Social Development
Consider the following high yielding varieties of crops in India:
- 1.Arjun
- 2.Jaya
- 3.Padma
- 4.Sonalika
Which of these are wheat?
AnswerThe answer is (c).
Arjun and Sonalika are high-yielding wheat varieties of the Green Revolution era. Jaya and Padma are high-yielding rice varieties; Jaya, released in the late 1960s, was among the first semi-dwarf rices. So the wheat varieties are 1 and 4.
- 1. Arjun is a high-yielding wheat variety.
- 2. Jaya is a high-yielding rice variety.
- 3. Padma is a high-yielding rice variety.
- 4. Sonalika is a high-yielding wheat variety.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (d) go: each of them leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: Arjun is a high-yielding wheat variety.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (a) goes: it includes 2.
What you needed to know: Jaya is a high-yielding rice variety.
Only (c) is left. You didn’t need statements 3 or 4.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Jaya is a rice variety.
- (b) Jaya and Padma are both rice.
- (c) Right: Arjun and Sonalika are wheat.
- (d) Padma is a rice variety.
