Question 131: Polity and Governance

In the case of election to the Lok Sabha, the amount of security deposited for general category candidates and SC/ST category candidates respectively is

aRs 5,000 and Rs 2,500
bRs 10,000 and Rs 2,500
cRs 10,000 and Rs 5,000
dRs 15,000 and Rs 7,500

AnswerThe answer is (c).

For the Lok Sabha the security deposit then was Rs 10,000 for general candidates and Rs 5,000 for SC/ST candidates, that is, half for the reserved categories. The deposit is forfeited if the candidate fails to get one-sixth of the valid votes polled. Remember the pattern: the SC/ST deposit is half of the general one.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Too low for 2002.
  • (b) The SC/ST deposit is half the general one, so Rs 5,000, not Rs 2,500.
  • (c) Right: Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000.
  • (d) Too high for 2002.

Worth knowing: The deposit was raised in 2009 to Rs 25,000 for general candidates and Rs 12,500 for SC/ST candidates, so these figures are out of date.
