Question 126: International Relations and Current Affairs

A World Summit with representation from all the countries will be held in Johannesburg in September 2002 on the subject of

aAIDS control
bGlobal terrorism
cHuman rights
dSustainable development

AnswerThe answer is (d).

The World Summit on Sustainable Development was held in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 26 August to 4 September 2002, ten years after the Rio Earth Summit of 1992, which is why it was also called Rio+10. Its subject was sustainable development: poverty, environment and development taken together. AIDS control, terrorism and human rights were not its subject.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) AIDS control was not the subject of the Johannesburg summit.
  • (b) Global terrorism was not the subject of the Johannesburg summit.
  • (c) Human rights was not the subject of the Johannesburg summit.
  • (d) Right: sustainable development.
