Question 120: Geography
Consider the following countries:
- 1.Albania
- 2.Bosnia Herzegovina
- 3.Croatia
- 4.Macedonia
Which of these countries has/have Adriatic Sea as a boundary?
AnswerThe answer is (b).
The Adriatic Sea washes the coasts of Albania, Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, which has a short coastline of about 20 km at Neum. Macedonia (now North Macedonia) is landlocked, so it has no coast on the Adriatic. Remember the other Adriatic countries: Italy, Slovenia and Montenegro.
- 1. Albania has an Adriatic coast.
- 2. Bosnia-Herzegovina has a short Adriatic coast at Neum.
- 3. Croatia has a long Adriatic coast.
- 4. Macedonia is landlocked.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (c) and (d) go: each of them leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: Albania has an Adriatic coast.
- Then, if you were sure statement 3 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 3 out.
What you needed to know: Croatia has a long Adriatic coast.
Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statements 2 or 4.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Leaves out Croatia, which has a long Adriatic coast.
- (b) Right: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia.
- (c) Macedonia is landlocked.
- (d) Macedonia is landlocked, and this also leaves out Albania and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
