Question 114: Polity and Governance
The term of the Lok Sabha
acannot be extended under any circumstances
bcan be extended by six months at a time
ccan be extended by one year at a time during the proclamation of emergency
dcan be extended for two years at a time during the proclamation of emergency
AnswerThe answer is (c).
Under Article 83(2) the Lok Sabha's normal term is five years, but while a Proclamation of Emergency is in operation Parliament may extend it by law, one year at a time, and not beyond six months after the Emergency ends. It cannot be extended in ordinary times, and the extension is not six months or two years at a time.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: it can be extended during an Emergency.
- (b) There is no six-month extension in normal times.
- (c) Right: one year at a time during an Emergency.
- (d) The extension is one year at a time, not two.
