Question 112: International Relations and Current Affairs

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum was held in the year 2001 in

aBangkok
bHongkong
cJakarta
dShanghai

AnswerThe answer is (d).

APEC's 2001 leaders' meeting was held in Shanghai, China, in October 2001, the first major summit after the attacks of 11 September. Remember the recent hosts: 1999 Auckland, 2000 Brunei, 2001 Shanghai, 2002 Los Cabos in Mexico. India is not a member of APEC, so the forum is easy to confuse with groupings India does belong to.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Bangkok hosted APEC in 2003, not 2001.
  • (b) Hong Kong did not host APEC in 2001.
  • (c) Indonesia hosted APEC in 1994 at Bogor, not in 2001.
  • (d) Right: Shanghai.
