Question 109: Economy and Social Development

Consider the following statements:

  1. 1.NTPC is the largest power utility in India.
  2. 2.ONGC accounts for half of the LPG production in India.
  3. 3.Indian Oil Corporation operates all the oil refineries in India.
  4. 4.The Indian Ordinance Factory is the largest departmentally run industrial undertaking in the country.

Which of these statements is/are correct?

a1 only
b2 and 3
c2, 3 and 4
d1 and 4

AnswerThe answer is (d).

Statement 1 is true: NTPC is the largest power utility in India. Statement 4 is true: the Indian Ordnance Factories form the largest departmentally run industrial undertaking. Statement 2 is false: ONGC does not account for half of India's LPG, most of which comes from refineries. Statement 3 is false: Indian Oil does not run all refineries; BPCL, HPCL, CPCL, MRPL and others run the rest. So only 1 and 4 are correct.

  • 1. NTPC is the largest power utility.
  • 2. ONGC supplies only a part of LPG, not half; refineries make most of it.
  • 3. Several companies run India's refineries, not Indian Oil alone.
  • 4. The Indian Ordnance Factories are the largest departmentally run industrial undertaking.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (b) and (c) go: each of them includes 3.

What you needed to know: Several companies run India's refineries, not Indian Oil alone.

The red flag in statement 3 is “all”. In UPSC’s papers, statements with “all” were true 41% of the time (76 statements). A hint, not a rule.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 4 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 4 out.

What you needed to know: The Indian Ordnance Factories are the largest departmentally run industrial undertaking.

Only (d) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 2.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Leaves out statement 4, which is also true.
  • (b) Both 2 and 3 are false.
  • (c) Includes 2 and 3, which are false.
  • (d) Right: statements 1 and 4.
