Question 10: Basic Numeracy
A trader fixed the price of an article in such a way that by giving a rebate of 10 % on the price fixed he made a profit of 15 %. If the cost of the article is Rs 72, the price fixed on it is
aRs 82.80
bRs 90.00
cRs 92.00
dRs 97.80
AnswerThe answer is (c).
Cost is Rs 72 and the profit is 15 percent, so the selling price is 72 x 1.15 = Rs 82.80. That price comes after a 10 percent rebate, so it is 90 percent of the price fixed: 82.80 / 0.9 = Rs 92. Check: 10 percent off 92 is 9.20, which leaves 82.80.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Rs 82.80 is the selling price after the rebate, not the price fixed.
- (b) Rs 90 less 10 percent is 81, a profit of only 12.5 percent.
- (c) Right: 92 less 10 percent is 82.80, a 15 percent profit on 72.
- (d) Rs 97.80 less 10 percent is 88.02, a profit well above 15 percent.
