Question 99: Economy and Social Development
The earlier name of WTO was
aUNCTAD
bGATT
cUNIDO
dOECD
AnswerThe answer is (b).
The WTO replaced the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) on 1 January 1995, following the Uruguay Round. GATT was a set of rules and a forum for tariff negotiation; the WTO is a permanent organisation with legal standing, its own dispute settlement body and coverage of services and intellectual property as well as goods. Remember GATT 1947, WTO 1995.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) UNCTAD is a separate UN body on trade and development.
- (b) Right: GATT.
- (c) UNIDO is a UN body for industrial development.
- (d) The OECD is a grouping of developed economies.
