Question 93: Geography
Volcanic eruptions do not occur in the
aBaltic Sea
bBlack Sea
cCaribbean Sea
dCaspian Sea
AnswerThe answer is (a).
The Baltic Sea lies on the stable Baltic Shield, far from any plate boundary, so there are no volcanic eruptions there. The Caribbean has active volcanoes (such as Mont Pelee and Soufriere) on a plate boundary, and the Black Sea and Caspian regions, in the Caucasus belt, have volcanic and mud-volcano activity. Remember that volcanoes follow plate boundaries, so shield areas like the Baltic are quiet.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Right: the Baltic is a stable shield area with no volcanism.
- (b) The Black Sea region lies in an active belt with volcanic activity.
- (c) The Caribbean has active volcanoes on a plate boundary.
- (d) The Caspian region has volcanic and mud-volcano activity.
