Question 71: History and Culture

The Hunter Commission was appointed after the

aBlack hole incident
bJalian Walla Bagh massacre
cUprising of 1857
dPartition of Bengal

AnswerThe answer is (b).

The Hunter Commission, formally the Disorders Inquiry Committee, was appointed in 1919 under Lord Hunter to inquire into the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 13 April 1919 and the disturbances in Punjab. It criticised General Dyer, who was made to retire, but its findings were mild and the Congress held its own inquiry. Remember the Hunter Commission of 1882, which was on education.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) The Black Hole incident of 1756 had no Hunter Commission.
  • (b) Right: the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919.
  • (c) The 1857 uprising was followed by the Peel Commission on the army, not the Hunter Commission.
  • (d) The Partition of Bengal (1905) led to the Swadeshi movement, not the Hunter Commission.
