Question 2: History and Culture
Who among the following organised the famous Chittagong armoury raid?
aLaxmi Sehgal
bSurya Sen
cBatukeshwar Datta
dJ. M. Sengupta
AnswerThe answer is (b).
Surya Sen (Masterda) led the Chittagong armoury raid of 18 April 1930, in which revolutionaries seized the police and auxiliary force armouries in Chittagong and declared a provisional government. Remember him with Pritilata Waddedar, Kalpana Dutt and Ananta Singh of the same group. He was arrested in 1933 and hanged in 1934.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Laxmi Sehgal was an INA officer who commanded the Rani of Jhansi Regiment, not the Chittagong raid.
- (b) Right: Surya Sen planned and led the raid.
- (c) Batukeshwar Dutt threw bombs in the Central Legislative Assembly with Bhagat Singh in 1929.
- (d) J. M. Sengupta was a Bengal Congress leader, not an organiser of the raid.
