Question 128: Science and Technology

Antigen is a substance which

adestroys harmful bacteria
bis used to treat poisoning
clowers body temperature
dstimulates formation of antibody

AnswerThe answer is (d).

An antigen is any foreign substance, such as a protein on a microbe or a toxin, that the body recognises as foreign and that stimulates the immune system to make antibodies. Antibodies then bind to the antigen and help remove it. Treating poisoning uses antidotes, and antigens do not lower body temperature. Remember that the antigen triggers and the antibody responds.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Destroying bacteria is done by antibodies, antibiotics and white cells.
  • (b) Poisoning is treated with antidotes.
  • (c) Lowering temperature is the role of antipyretics.
  • (d) Right: an antigen stimulates formation of antibody.
