Question 126: Science and Technology

Which organelle in the cell, other than nucleus, contains DNA?

aCentriole
bGolgi apparatus
cLysosome
dMitochondrion

AnswerThe answer is (d).

Mitochondria contain their own small circular DNA, inherited through the mother, and their own ribosomes, which is why they can make some of their own proteins and divide independently. Chloroplasts in plants also carry DNA. Centrioles, the Golgi apparatus and lysosomes contain no DNA. Remember that besides the nucleus, mitochondria and chloroplasts hold DNA.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Centrioles have no DNA.
  • (b) The Golgi apparatus has no DNA.
  • (c) Lysosomes have no DNA.
  • (d) Right: mitochondria have their own DNA.
