Question 98: History and Culture

Assertion (A): Lord Linlithgow described the August Movement of 1942 as the most serious rebellion since Sepoy Mutiny. Reason (R): There was massive upsurge of the peasantry in certain areas.

aBoth A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A
bBoth A and R are true, but R is not a correct explanation of A
cA is true, but R is false
dA is false, but R is true

AnswerThe answer is (a).

Lord Linlithgow, the Viceroy, described the 1942 Quit India rising as the most serious rebellion since the Mutiny of 1857, so A is true. R is also true: in areas such as Midnapore in Bengal, Satara and Ballia, the peasantry joined in large numbers. Mass peasant involvement was a main reason the rising was so serious, so R explains A. Remember: Linlithgow compared 1942 with 1857.

  • A. Linlithgow called 1942 the most serious rebellion since 1857.
  • R. Peasants rose in large numbers in several areas, which explains the seriousness.

How you could have got this

If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (d) goes. Then judge the second statement; if it is correct too, decide whether it explains the first.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right. Both are true and the peasant upsurge explains the seriousness.
  • (b) Wrong. R does explain A.
  • (c) Wrong. R is true.
  • (d) Wrong. A is true.
