Question 89: History and Culture
Which one of the following Indian leaders was dismissed by the British from the Indian Civil Service?
AnswerThe answer is (b).
Surendranath Banerjea passed the Indian Civil Service examination in 1869 but was disqualified in an age dispute, passed again in 1871, and was dismissed in 1874 on a technical charge. He went on to become a leading Moderate and a founder of the Indian Association. Satyendranath Tagore was the first Indian ICS officer, R. C. Dutt served and retired, and Subhas Bose resigned in 1921. Remember: Banerjea was dismissed; Bose resigned.

- (b) Right. Banerjea was dismissed from the ICS in 1874.
- (c) Wrong. R. C. Dutt served and retired.
- (d) Wrong. Subhas Bose resigned from the ICS in 1921.
