Question 40: Geography
Which one of the following port cities in Venezuela has been developed as an oil port?
aCaracas
bMaracaibo
cMaracay
dCarupano
AnswerThe answer is (b).
Maracaibo, on Lake Maracaibo in north-west Venezuela, is the country's main oil port. The Maracaibo basin is Venezuela's richest oilfield, and exports leave through the port. Caracas is the capital, Maracay an industrial city in the north-centre, and Carupano a smaller port on the Caribbean coast in the east. Remember: Venezuela's oil means Maracaibo.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong. Caracas is the capital and not the oil port.
- (b) Right. Maracaibo is the oil port of the Maracaibo basin.
- (c) Wrong. Maracay is an inland industrial city.
- (d) Wrong. Carupano is a minor port, not an oil port.
