UPSC Prelims 1999 · General Studies
Question 126: Science and Technology
Low temperatures (Cryogenics) find application in
AnswerThe answer is (a).
Cryogenics, the use of very low temperatures, serves space travel (liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen as rocket propellants), surgery (cryosurgery, in which freezing destroys diseased tissue) and magnetic levitation (superconducting magnets cooled with liquid helium). Telemetry, sending measurements from a distance, does not depend on cryogenics. Remember: cryogenics means rockets, cryosurgery and superconducting magnets.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Right. Space travel, surgery and magnetic levitation.
- (b) Wrong. Includes telemetry and leaves out space travel.
- (c) Wrong. Includes telemetry and leaves out magnetic levitation.
- (d) Wrong. Includes telemetry and leaves out surgery.
