Question 104: Science and Technology
In eye donation, which one of the following parts of donor’s eye is utilised?
AnswerThe answer is (c).
In eye donation the cornea, the transparent front covering of the eye, is removed and transplanted to restore the sight of a person whose own cornea is damaged or clouded. The iris, lens and retina are not transplanted in this way. Corneal blindness is a major cause of curable blindness, and the donor's eyes must be removed within a few hours of death. Remember: eye donation means a corneal transplant.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong. The iris is not used.
- (b) Wrong. The lens is not what is transplanted.
- (c) Right. The cornea is transplanted.
- (d) Wrong. The retina cannot be transplanted.
