Question 32: History and Culture
Assertion (A): The Congress rejected the Cripps proposals. Reason (R): The Cripps Mission consisted solely of whites.
AnswerThe answer is (b).
The Cripps proposals of March 1942 offered dominion status after the war and a constituent assembly, but allowed provinces to stay out of the Union and gave Indians no real control of defence in the interim; the Congress rejected them, and so did the Muslim League. A is true. R is literally true, as the mission was Cripps and British officials, but it was not why the Congress refused. The objections were the provincial opt-out, which could lead to partition, the princely states' nominated representatives, and no immediate transfer of power.
- A. The Congress rejected the Cripps proposals in 1942.
- R. The mission was all British, but this was not the reason for rejection.
How you could have got this
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) R is true but does not explain the rejection.
- (b) Right: both are true, but R is not the reason the Congress rejected the proposals.
- (c) R is true, so this fails.
- (d) A is true, so this fails.
