Question 123: Science and Technology
The complete conversion of glucose in the presence of oxygen into carbon dioxide and water with release of energy is called
AnswerThe answer is (a).
Aerobic respiration is the complete oxidation of glucose in the presence of oxygen to carbon dioxide and water, releasing a large amount of energy stored as ATP. Anaerobic respiration is partial breakdown without oxygen, giving lactic acid or alcohol and little energy. Glycolysis is the first step in both, in the cytoplasm. Hydrolysis is the splitting of a compound with water.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Right: the complete breakdown of glucose with oxygen.
- (b) Anaerobic respiration happens without oxygen and is incomplete.
- (c) Glycolysis is only the first, partial step.
- (d) Hydrolysis is breakdown by water, not respiration.
