Question 112: Science and Technology
Haemophilia is a genetic disorder which leads to
adecrease in haemoglobin level
brheumatic heart disease
cdecrease in WBC
dnon-clotting of blood
AnswerThe answer is (d).
Haemophilia is an inherited bleeding disorder in which blood fails to clot properly because a clotting factor (factor VIII in haemophilia A, factor IX in haemophilia B) is missing. The gene is on the X chromosome and recessive, so it mostly affects males. It does not reduce haemoglobin or white cells, and it is not a heart disease.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Low haemoglobin describes anaemia.
- (b) Rheumatic heart disease follows streptococcal infection.
- (c) A fall in white blood cells is leucopenia, not haemophilia.
- (d) Right: the blood does not clot normally.
