Question 110: Science and Technology

Consumption of fish is considered to be healthy when compared to flesh of other animals because fish contains

apolyunsaturated fatty acids
bsaturated fatty acids
cessential vitamins
dmore carbohydrates and proteins

AnswerThe answer is (a).

Fish oils are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, notably the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which lower blood triglycerides and the risk of heart disease. Meat from land animals has more saturated fat. Fish is a good source of protein, but it contains little carbohydrate, and it is the fatty acid profile that makes it healthier than flesh from other animals.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: polyunsaturated fatty acids are what make fish a healthier food.
  • (b) Saturated fatty acids are more common in meat, and are less healthy.
  • (c) Vitamins are in many foods and are not what sets fish apart.
  • (d) Fish has little carbohydrate; protein is not what makes it healthier.
