Question 100: Polity and Governance

Which of the following Parties were not a part of the United Front which was in power during 1996-97? I. Bahujan Samaj Party II. Samata Party III. Haryana Vikas Party IV. Asom Gana Parishad Select the correct answer using the codes given below:

aI, II, III and IV
bI, II and III
cIII and IV
dI and II

AnswerThe answer is (b).

The United Front government of 1996-98 under Deve Gowda and then I.K. Gujral was a coalition led by the Janata Dal and included regional parties such as the DMK, the TDP, the AGP and the Left parties, with the Congress supporting from outside. The BSP, the Samata Party and the Haryana Vikas Party were not constituents, while the Asom Gana Parishad was. So the parties that were not part of it are I, II and III.

  • I. The BSP was not part of the United Front.
  • II. The Samata Party was not part of the United Front.
  • III. The Haryana Vikas Party was not part of the United Front.
  • IV. The Asom Gana Parishad was a constituent of the United Front.
Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) IV, the AGP, was part of the United Front.
  • (b) Right: BSP, Samata and Haryana Vikas Party were not part of it.
  • (c) Haryana Vikas Party was outside, but AGP was inside.
  • (d) BSP and Samata were outside, but the list leaves out the Haryana Vikas Party.
