Question 39: Geography

Match List I with List II and select the correct answer by using the codes given below the lists: List I (Crops) I. Barley II. Rice III. Millets IV. Tea List II (Geographical conditions) A) Hot and dry climate with poor soil B) Cool climate with poorer soil C) Warm and moist climate with high altitude D) Hot and moist climate with rich soil Codes:

aI–B, II–D, III–A, IV–C
bI–C, II–D, III–A, IV–B
cI–B, II–A, III–D, IV–C
dI–C, II–B, III–D, IV–A

AnswerThe answer is (a).

Barley does best in a cool climate with poorer soil. Rice needs hot, moist conditions and rich alluvial soil. Millets are hardy crops of hot, dry areas with poor soil. Tea grows in a warm, moist climate on high ground. Remember rice as the water-hungry crop and millets as the dry-land crop, and eliminate from there.

  • I. I-B: barley prefers a cool climate and poorer soil.
  • II. II-D: rice needs heat, moisture and rich soil.
  • III. III-A: millets are hardy crops of hot, dry areas with poor soil.
  • IV. IV-C: tea grows in a warm, moist climate at altitude.
Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: barley-cool and poor soil, rice-hot, moist and rich soil, millets-hot and dry, tea-warm, moist highlands.
  • (b) I-C puts barley in a warm, moist highland climate, which is tea's, and IV-B puts tea in a cool, poor-soil climate.
  • (c) II-A puts rice in hot, dry, poor-soil land, which suits millets.
  • (d) Every pairing is wrong, such as rice in a cool climate with poorer soil.
