Question 33: Geography
The canal carrying capacity of Farakka is
a75,000 cusecs
b70,000 cusecs
c40,000 cusecs
d35,000 cusecs
AnswerThe answer is (c).
The Farakka Barrage on the Ganga, in West Bengal, feeds a feeder canal about 38 km long that carries 40,000 cusecs into the Bhagirathi-Hooghly. The aim is to flush silt from the Hooghly and keep Kolkata port navigable. Sharing the Ganga water at Farakka led to the India-Bangladesh water treaty of 1996. Remember 40,000 cusecs.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) 75,000 cusecs is well above the canal's capacity.
- (b) 70,000 cusecs is well above the canal's capacity.
- (c) Right: the feeder canal carries 40,000 cusecs.
- (d) 35,000 cusecs is below the canal's designed capacity of 40,000.
