Question 138: Data Interpretation
The number of students in two sections, A and B, having different heights is shown in the following table: Height (in metres) Number of students with that height in Section A Section B 1.55 3 2 1.60 7 3 1.62 12 14 1.65 15 14 1.68 8 9 1.71 6 5 1.75 3 4 The ratio of the number of students of a particular height in Section A to that in Section B is the maximum for the height of
AnswerThe answer is (b).
For each height divide the number in Section A by the number in Section B: 1.55 m gives 3/2 = 1.5; 1.60 m gives 7/3, about 2.33; 1.62 m gives 12/14, about 0.86; 1.65 m gives 15/14, about 1.07; 1.68 m gives 8/9, about 0.89; 1.71 m gives 6/5 = 1.2; 1.75 m gives 3/4 = 0.75. The largest ratio is at 1.60 m.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) 1.55 m gives 1.5, less than 2.33.
- (b) Right: 1.60 m gives the largest ratio, about 2.33.
- (c) 1.65 m gives only about 1.07.
- (d) 1.71 m gives 1.2.
