Question 111: Science and Technology
The characteristic odour of garlic is due to
aa chloro compound
ba sulphur compound
ca fluorine compound
dacetic acid
AnswerThe answer is (b).
The smell of garlic comes from sulphur compounds, mainly allicin and the sulphides formed from it when a clove is crushed. Sulphur compounds are behind many strong smells, such as those of onions and rotten eggs. Remember sulphur for garlic, as it is the same element behind the pungency of onions.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) No chloro compound gives garlic its smell.
- (b) Right: sulphur compounds.
- (c) Fluorine compounds are not responsible for the smell of garlic.
- (d) Acetic acid is the sour part of vinegar.
