Question 81: History and Culture
Which one of the following pairs is correctly matched?
AnswerThe answer is (b).
The Battle of Wandiwash, fought in 1760, was won by the English East India Company under Sir Eyre Coote against the French under Lally, and it ended French power in southern India. The other pairs are wrong: Buxar (1764) was fought against Mir Qasim, Shuja-ud-daula and Shah Alam II, Chilianwala (1849) was between the Sikhs and the British in the Second Anglo-Sikh War, and Kharda (1795) was between the Nizam and the Marathas. Remember: Wandiwash, 1760.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Buxar was fought in 1764 against Mir Qasim and his allies; Mir Jafar and Clive belong to Plassey.
- (b) Right: the French against the English East India Company.
- (c) Chilianwala was fought by the Sikhs against the British, not the Marathas.
- (d) Kharda was fought between the Nizam and the Marathas.
