Question 79: Economy and Social Development
Which of the following benefits are likely to accrue to India from the World Trade Organisation? I. India’s share in the world trade is to go up from the present 600 million US dollars to 5 billion US dollars by 2000 A.D. II. It will help boost exports of agricultural commodities from India. III. India’s share in the world trade is likely to triple by the year 2000 A.D. Select the correct answer using the codes given below:
AnswerThe answer is (d).
The claims made for the WTO were framed in terms of trade growth: that India's share of world trade would roughly triple by 2000, and that farm exports would gain from the opening of agricultural markets. The first statement is wrong on its numbers, since a share cannot be 600 million dollars and India's exports were already tens of billions of dollars. Remember: statements II and III were the gains claimed; I mis-states the figures.
- I. The figures are wrong: India's exports were already far above 600 million dollars.
- II. Opening of farm markets was expected to help agricultural exports.
- III. India's share of world trade was expected to triple by 2000.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Includes I, whose figures are wrong.
- (b) Includes I, whose figures are wrong, and leaves out III.
- (c) Includes I and leaves out II, the gain for farm exports.
- (d) Right per the key: II and III.
