Question 69: Environment and Ecology

Which one of the following does not belong to biosphere reserves set up so far?

aGreat Nicobar
bSunderbans
cNanda Devi
dGulf of Kachchh

AnswerThe answer is (d).

Biosphere reserves are protected areas under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere programme. By 1995 India had notified reserves including Nilgiri, Nanda Devi, Nokrek, Manas, Sundarbans, Gulf of Mannar and Great Nicobar. The Gulf of Kachchh, which has a Marine National Park, was not among them. Remember: the Gulf of Mannar was a biosphere reserve then; the Gulf of Kachchh was not.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Great Nicobar is a biosphere reserve (1989).
  • (b) Sunderbans is a biosphere reserve (1989).
  • (c) Nanda Devi is a biosphere reserve (1988).
  • (d) Right: the Gulf of Kachchh was not among the biosphere reserves set up by then.
