Question 67: Geography

The Indian subcontinent was originally part of a huge land mass called

aJurassic Land Mass
bAryavarta
cIndiana
dGondwana Continent

AnswerThe answer is (d).

India was once part of Gondwanaland, the huge southern supercontinent that also included Africa, South America, Australia and Antarctica. The Indian plate separated from it more than 100 million years ago and drifted north until it joined Asia. Remember: Gondwanaland in the south and Laurasia in the north; India came from Gondwanaland.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Jurassic is the name of a geological period, not of a land mass.
  • (b) Aryavarta is an ancient name for northern India, not a prehistoric land mass.
  • (c) Indiana is not a name for a land mass in this sense.
  • (d) Right: Gondwana continent.
