Question 59: Economy and Social Development

Which one of the following is true regarding the Jawahar Rozgar Yojana (JRY)?

aIt was launched during the Prime Ministership of Indira Gandhi
bIt aims at creating one million jobs annually
cThe target group of JRY are the urban poor living below the poverty line
dUnder the scheme 30% of the employment generated is reserved for women

AnswerThe answer is (d).

The Jawahar Rozgar Yojana was launched on 1 April 1989 under Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, so the first option is wrong. It was a wage-employment programme for the rural poor, not the urban poor, and it aimed at hundreds of millions of days of work a year, not a million jobs. One of its features was that 30 per cent of the employment opportunities were reserved for women. Remember: JRY, 1989, rural, 30 per cent for women.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: it began in 1989 under Rajiv Gandhi; Indira Gandhi had died in 1984.
  • (b) Wrong: it aimed at hundreds of millions of days of work, not a million jobs.
  • (c) Wrong: it was meant for the rural poor, not the urban poor.
  • (d) Right: 30 per cent of the employment was reserved for women.
