Question 122: Science and Technology
Which one of the following antimicrobial drugs is suitable for treatment of both tuberculosis and leprosy?
AnswerThe answer is (d).
Rifampicin is effective against both the tuberculosis bacillus and the leprosy bacillus and is part of the treatment for each. Isoniazid and p-aminosalicylic acid are anti-tuberculosis drugs, and streptomycin is mainly used for tuberculosis. Leprosy is treated with a combination of dapsone, clofazimine and rifampicin. Remember: rifampicin is common to tuberculosis and leprosy regimens.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Isoniazid is for tuberculosis, not for leprosy.
- (b) PAS is an older anti-tuberculosis drug.
- (c) Streptomycin is used for tuberculosis, not as a leprosy drug.
- (d) Right: rifampicin.
