Question 100: History and Culture
Which one of the following pairs is not correctly matched?
aJamnalal Bajaj — Satyagraha Ashram at Wardha
bDadabhai Naoroji — Bombay Association
cLala Lajpat Rai — National School at Lahore
dBal Gangadhar Tilak — Satya Shodhak Sabha
AnswerThe answer is (d).
The Satya Shodhak Sabha was founded in 1873 by Jyotiba Phule to fight caste oppression and uplift the lower castes. It was not Bal Gangadhar Tilak's body: Tilak is associated with the Ganapati and Shivaji festivals and the newspapers Kesari and Mahratta. The other three pairs are accepted as correct in the key. Remember: Phule, Satyashodhak Samaj.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Jamnalal Bajaj, a close follower of Gandhi, is linked with the Satyagraha Ashram at Wardha.
- (b) Taken as correctly matched, unlike the Tilak pair.
- (c) Lajpat Rai started a national educational institution at Lahore in the non-cooperation years; the pair is accepted as correct.
- (d) Right: the Satya Shodhak Sabha was Phule's, not Tilak's.
