Global warming - Impact on Arctic
UNEP has highlighted that the Arctic is heating twice as faster to other region on the earth - this phenomena is known as Arctic amplification and one of the major cause is - Global warming.
Global warming:- opening new world of opportunities (1) Open up new trade routes that can be more cheaper (2) Arctic is a store house of critical minerals (3) It has huge natural gas reserves - important for Energy security (4) decrease bilateral conflicts eq:- opening up of Murmansk port has provided an ice free port access to Russia (5) Rich in aquatic resources (6) This will open up new avenues for sustainable development.
Global warming:- threat to existing humanity (1) This can increase conflicts among nations for dominating the Arctic (2) This may lead to exposure to deadly pathogens eq:- Zombi virus (3) This will lead to increase in global sea-level
(4) This was decrease Albedo of earth surface (5) further enhance more warming both of earth atmosphere and marine ecosystem (6) Increased human intervention will impact the Arctic ecosystem it's flora and fauna
As Global warming & climate change are inevitable the world needs to:- (1) Gather on a platform to chart out Global Arctic Policy (2) There is a need for equitable sharing of resources (3) Avoid increased use of fossil fuel based-ships in the region as black carbon can further increase melting of glaciers
