- Why in news
- India's 8th Trade Policy Review at the WTO is scheduled for 21 and 23 July 2026, with the Commerce Secretary leading the delegation (release dated 20 July 2026).
- What it is
- The Trade Policy Review Mechanism is a WTO transparency tool. Each Member's trade policies are examined by the Trade Policy Review Body, which is made up of all WTO Members. The review rests on a government report and a WTO Secretariat report.
- Who reviews
- The Trade Policy Review Body, made up of the entire WTO membership, conducts the reviews.
- Two documents
- A policy statement from the Member under review and a WTO Secretariat report form the basis of the review.
- Frequency
- How often a Member is reviewed depends on its share of world trade. India is reviewed once every five years.
- Period covered
- India's 8th TPR covers 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2025.
- Purpose
- It is a peer review meant to improve transparency, predictability and understanding of trade policies, covering border and behind-the-border measures.
- Origin
- The TPRM was set up in 1989 during the Uruguay Round and is now Annex 3 of the WTO Agreement.
Don’t confuse with TPRM vs Dispute Settlement Body: The TPRM is a transparency and peer review process with no penalties. The Dispute Settlement Body handles complaints and can authorise retaliation.
Don’t confuse with TPRB vs General Council: The General Council meets as the TPRB when it conducts reviews. It is a separate function, not a separate membership.
International bodies and relations: the largest group of news questions in Prelims (61 since 2013), often about background, members and location. In Mains, 27 news-triggered questions, mostly on India's interests.
Why it matters
- Keeps India's trade policies open to scrutiny, which supports predictability for trading partners.
- Gives India a platform to present its reforms such as GST rationalisation, FTAs and digital trade tools.
Problems
- Review is non-binding and cannot force a Member to change policy.
- Members' questions on tariffs, subsidies and non-tariff measures can expose India to criticism.
Way forward
- Use the review to explain India's positions, including on agriculture and industrial policy.
- Respond to Members' questions in writing and address identified concerns.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: India's 8th TPR is a lasting WTO process; international bodies are 61 of 327 Prelims questions, but this item has few testable facts.
Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
