- Why in news
- On 3 September 2026, EPFO urged eligible employers to use VISHWAS, 2026, a one-time scheme to settle old EPF damages disputes at reduced rates. The scheme closes on 28 December 2026.
- What it is
- VISHWAS, 2026 is a one-time settlement scheme for EPF damages, the penalty charged when employers deposit provident fund contributions late. It offers sharply lower penalty rates to employers who clear dues and settle pending disputes. It aims to cut litigation and recover dues faster.
- Closing date
- The scheme is open until 28 December 2026 and the date will not be extended.
- Cut-off date for cases
- It covers delayed PF payments from before 14 June 2024, including cases pending in courts or tribunals.
- Process
- Employers must first clear all outstanding interest on delayed contributions, then apply online on the EPFO Employer Portal.
- Settlement Certificate
- After payment, EPFO issues a digitally signed Settlement Certificate and pending court or tribunal proceedings close.
- Normal maximum penalty
- Under normal rules the penalty for late PF deposit can be as high as 37% per year.
Don’t confuse with EPF damages vs interest: Damages are the penalty for late deposit; interest on delayed contributions is separate and must be paid first under VISHWAS.
Don’t confuse with EPFO vs EPF Scheme: EPFO is the body that administers the provident fund; the EPF Scheme is the rules under which contributions are made.

Why it matters
- Cuts long-pending litigation in courts and tribunals.
- Helps recover dues and gives employers relief from heavy penalties.
Problems
- Employers may delay applying and miss the fixed deadline.
- Reduced penalties may weaken the deterrent against late deposits.
Way forward
- Spread awareness among small employers through regional offices and helpdesks.
- Strengthen digital monitoring so that late deposits are caught early.
