Why in news
On 17 October 2026, a PIB Backgrounder reviewed how rail, road and air projects have connected Jammu and Kashmir to the rest of India, led by the USBRL and the Chenab Bridge.
What it is
The Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) is a national rail project through the Himalayas in Jammu and Kashmir. It links the Kashmir Valley to the Indian rail network through a chain of tunnels and bridges. Its best-known structure is the Chenab Rail Bridge in Reasi district.
Project scale
USBRL runs 272 km, with 36 tunnels covering 119 km and 943 bridges.
Tunnel T50
A 12.77 km rail tunnel between Khari and Sumber, India's longest transportation tunnel. It was built with the New Austrian Tunnelling Method.
Zojila Tunnel
A 13.153 km bi-directional tunnel between Baltal and Minamarg on NH-1, built by NHIDCL. It will give all-weather links between Kashmir and Ladakh.
Cost and districts
The project cost ₹43,780 crore. It covers eight districts from Udhampur to Baramulla.

Don’t confuse with Chenab Bridge vs Anji Khad Bridge: Chenab is an arch bridge, the world's highest rail arch bridge. Anji Khad is cable-stayed, India's first of its kind. Both are in Reasi district.

Don’t confuse with Tunnel T50 vs Zojila Tunnel: T50 is a rail tunnel of 12.77 km on USBRL. Zojila is a road tunnel of 13.153 km on NH-1, still under construction.

Places in the news: 26 Prelims questions since 2013, rising (12% of news questions in 2022–26); they test location and why it matters.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting infrastructure topic with place facts such as the Chenab Bridge, but a backgrounder with no new decision; no Mains debate set out.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
