- Why in news
- On 29 June 2026, the 20th Statistics Day, MoSPI released the SDG National Indicator Framework Progress Report 2026, a data snapshot, the NIF handbook with metadata, and a bulletin on the 'People' dimension of the SDGs.
- What it is
- The National Indicator Framework (NIF) is India's national set of indicators to monitor the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. MoSPI built it in consultation with Ministries, NITI Aayog and UN agencies. MoSPI compiles the yearly Progress Report from data supplied by line Ministries and Departments.
- Publisher
- MoSPI developed the NIF and publishes the progress report, using data from line Ministries/Departments.
- Size of the framework
- The NIF 2026 has 277 national indicators covering all 17 SDGs.
- Release date
- MoSPI releases these reports every year on 29 June, Statistics Day.
- Maternal mortality
- Maternal Mortality Ratio fell from 122 (2015-17) to 87 per 100,000 live births (2022-24).
- Ramsar share
- Ramsar sites' share of total wetland area rose from 4.15% in 2016 to 8.66% in 2026.
Don’t confuse with NIF vs NITI Aayog SDG India Index: The NIF and its progress report come from MoSPI and track national indicators. The SDG India Index is a separate NITI Aayog ranking of States and UTs.
Don’t confuse with Global indicator framework vs NIF: The UN has a global indicator framework for the SDGs. The NIF is India's own set, adapted to national data and policy.
Reports and indices: 14 Prelims questions since 2013; they test who publishes a report and what it measures.
Why it matters
- Gives a common, data-based way to track progress on all 17 SDGs nationally.
- Supplies evidence for policy design and programme review.
Problems
- Data depends on line Ministries, so timeliness and consistency vary.
- Some indicators have limited time series or little disaggregation by State or group.
Way forward
- Strengthen administrative and survey data systems and align them with State-level monitoring.
- Improve disaggregated data so that no one is left behind.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: MoSPI's annual SDG National Indicator Framework progress report is a lasting topic; reports drew 14 Prelims questions, but this release has few testable facts.
Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
