- Why in news
- On 29 July 2026, PIB published a explainer on the PM Vidyalaxmi Scheme, giving coverage, loan terms and FY 2025-26 application and sanction numbers.
- What it is
- PM Vidyalaxmi is a Union Education Ministry scheme approved by the Cabinet in November 2024. It gives collateral-free, guarantor-free education loans to students admitted on merit to designated Quality Higher Educational Institutions. It follows the National Education Policy 2020 and works through a single digital portal.
- Approval
- The Union Cabinet approved the scheme on 6 November 2024.
- Credit guarantee
- The Government of India gives a 75% credit guarantee on loans up to ₹7.5 lakh.
- Interest rate cap
- Loan interest is capped at the bank's EBLR plus 0.5%.
Don’t confuse with PM-USP CSIS vs PM-Vidyalaxmi: CSIS gives full subvention in the moratorium for technical/professional courses, family income up to ₹4.5 lakh, with no slot limit. PM-Vidyalaxmi gives 3% for all courses at designated institutions, income up to ₹8 lakh, one lakh slots a year.

Why it matters
- Reduces financial barriers to higher education and supports NEP 2020 and SDG 4.
Problems
- Coverage is tied to NIRF-ranked institutions, which may exclude many students.
- The cap of one lakh subvention slots a year limits reach.
Way forward
- Review institution criteria and slot limits as demand data builds.
- Track sanction and disbursal rates and grievances on the portal.
