- Why in news
- PIB published an explainer on PM e-Vidya on 10 March 2026. It reports DIKSHA at over 2 crore registered users (March 2026) and SWAYAM at about 5.80 crore enrolments (January 2026).
- What it is
- PM e-Vidya is a Government of India programme that brings online, on-air and offline learning under one framework. It began as a COVID-19 lockdown response in 2020 and was formalised under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. It joins platforms such as DIKSHA, SWAYAM, SWAYAM Prabha, radio and content for children with special needs.
- SWAYAM
- A free national MOOC platform, launched with IIT Madras. Courses come from ten National Coordinators such as NPTEL, UGC, AICTE, CEC, IGNOU, NCERT and NIOS. Certificates need a paid, proctored exam.
- Credit framework
- UGC regulations of 2021 let institutions offer up to 40 per cent of a programme's courses in a semester through SWAYAM.
- DIKSHA
- National digital platform for school education, launched 2017, open-source and federated. It is led by NCERT with CIET and uses QR-coded energised textbooks.
- SATHEE
- Self-Assessment, Test, and Help for Entrance Examination, launched in November 2023 by the Ministry of Education with IIT Kanpur. It is free and has seven dedicated DTH channels.
Don’t confuse with SWAYAM vs SWAYAM Prabha: SWAYAM is an online MOOC portal; SWAYAM Prabha is a set of 48 DTH TV channels.
Don’t confuse with DIKSHA vs SATHEE: DIKSHA serves school education (K-12) and teachers; SATHEE serves entrance exam and higher education preparation.
Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Gives learners in remote areas free access to content through TV, radio and internet, which narrows the digital divide.
- Supports NEP 2020 aims of technology-enabled, equitable and flexible learning, including for children with special needs.
Problems
- Uneven internet, device and electricity access limits reach, especially for poor and rural households.
- Teacher shortages and learning gaps are not fixed by content alone; engagement and outcomes are hard to track.
Way forward
- Strengthen last-mile connectivity and devices, and keep offline and broadcast modes alongside online ones.
- Link platforms with teacher training and measure learning outcomes, not just enrolments.
