Piprahwa Relics and Sacred Exposition of Tathagata Relics

GS1 Art and culture: BuddhismPrelims and Mains

In the news since 2 May 2026

Why in news
On 2 May 2026, PM Modi welcomed the inauguration of the 'Sacred Exposition of the Holy Relics of the Tathagata' in Leh, held on 1 May 2026, Buddha Purnima. It runs until 14 May and will then go to Zanskar.
What it is
The Piprahwa relics come from a stupa at Piprahwa, linked to Kapilavastu, where Buddha's early life is placed. They were dug up in the late nineteenth century. They are bone relics tied to the Buddha and are shown to the public in expositions.
Origin of relics
The relics are linked to the Piprahwa Stupa in Kapilavastu and were excavated in the closing years of the nineteenth century.
Duration and route
The exposition continues until 14 May and will travel to Zanskar.
Stated aim
It is expected to boost spiritual and cultural tourism in Ladakh.
Location of site
Piprahwa is in Siddharthnagar district, Uttar Pradesh, on the border with Nepal.

Don’t confuse with Piprahwa vs Lumbini: Lumbini in Nepal is the Buddha's birthplace. Piprahwa is the stupa site linked to Kapilavastu in India, where relics were found.

Don’t confuse with Buddha Purnima vs other Buddhist days: Buddha Purnima marks the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and death in the Theravada tradition. It is the day this exposition opened.

Art and culture in the news: Prelims tests UNESCO listings, GI tags and where a site is.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Piprahwa Stupa and Kapilavastu are lasting culture topics; culture drew only 8 Prelims questions and almost never reaches Mains, so no question.

Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.
