- Why in news
- On 20 March 2026, the CMD of NSTFDC briefed tribal homestay owners from Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim on its loan schemes at an ITDC–Ministry of Tribal Affairs workshop in New Delhi.

It gives concessional finance to Scheduled Tribe beneficiaries for income-generating activities and their socio-economic and educational upliftment. It lends mainly through State Channelizing Agencies, banks and regional rural banks.

- Term Loan Scheme

Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Concessional credit helps tribal households start enterprises, especially in tourism, a livelihood that builds on tribal culture.
- The women-specific scheme AMSY promotes women's entrepreneurship among STs.
Problems
- Beneficiaries depend on State Channelizing Agencies, so awareness and the capacity of these agencies vary between states.
- Tribal entrepreneurs often lack collateral and credit history, and are in remote areas with poor connectivity.
Way forward
- Hold more outreach and capacity-building workshops, and pair loans with training and market linkage.
- Strengthen State Channelizing Agencies and extend digital access to loan applications.
