- Why in news
- On 9 September 2026, National Fluorosis Day, the Union Health Ministry held a national multi-stakeholder workshop on fluorosis through the DGHS. It aimed to strengthen NPPCF through research, innovation and multisectoral action.
- What it is
- The National Programme for Prevention and Control of Fluorosis (NPPCF) is a health programme of the Union Health Ministry. It tackles fluorosis, a disease caused by long-term excess fluoride intake, mostly through drinking water. It works through surveillance, health education, diagnosis and case management, and links with drinking water and sanitation agencies.
- Aim of NPPCF
- It seeks to prevent and control fluorosis through surveillance, capacity building, health education, early diagnosis and case management, plus inter-sectoral action on fluoride exposure.
- Who organised the workshop
- The Health Ministry organised it through the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
- Stakeholders involved
- Jal Shakti Ministry, ICAR, ICMR, AIIMS, the National Dental Commission and State Nodal Officers took part.
- Link to water and sanitation
- The Ministry stressed convergence with drinking water and sanitation sectors because excess fluoride exposure is closely linked to fluorosis.
Don’t confuse with Fluorosis vs arsenicosis: Fluorosis comes from excess fluoride in water; arsenicosis comes from arsenic contamination. Both are groundwater-linked health problems.
Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Fluorosis is a preventable disease tied to groundwater quality, so the programme links health with water supply.
Problems
- Success depends on coordination between health and water agencies, which work under different ministries.
Way forward
- Strengthen surveillance and real-time data sharing, and tie case management to safe drinking water supply.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: A lasting health programme that is on the syllabus, but today's release is a workshop with no new decision. Question unlikely.
